Sony seem to be absolutely terrible at keeping a lid on their hardware. After the leak of the PSPgo before E309 which was announced to nobodies surprise. For a while now pictures and rumours of a newer slimmed and most importantly cheaper version of the PlayStation 3 and lo and behold, August 18 – GamesCom in Cologne, Germany, Sony announed the new PlayStation 3 Slim for a price point of $299 or £249.
The PlayStation 3 Slim will arrive in September and according to Sony is 32% smaller, 36% lighter and consumes 34% power making it overall around 1/3rd smaller but will retain all the features of the current models of PlayStation 3 except with the ‘install other OS’ feature removed. In preparation for the release Sony are also releasing a new firmware (3.0) which adds new features such as bringing the Video Store to Europe, a new ‘what’s new’ feature, a slight redesign of the XMB and a change in the way trophies are displayed.
If you still do not own a PlayStation 3 the slim does appear to be a very attractive package and for the new lower price it makes it much more competitive with the Xbox 360. It should also be noted that Sony will be packing in a 120GB HDD with the slim, which of course is an increase from the current minimum of 80GB.
It seems some websites will try and convince you that the PSP is a dead system, however with around 45 million units out there and a pretty solid list of games I don’t know how this could be true and it seems that Sony agrees. Earlier today Sony released a press release which outlines some of their biggest titles which are planned for release on the PSP in the year 2009.
According to their release they have LittleBigPlanet, Rock Band: Unplugged, Assassin’s Creed, Dissidia: Final Fantasy as well as Motorstorm: Arctic Edge which comes with its own trailer fresh from Sony themselves.
Now as well as these games they also announced a new Hannah Montana game as well as some Petz games which I’m sure everybody must be incredibly excited for.
So it looks like 2009 will be a really good year for the PSP, LittleBigPlanet is really good on the PS3 and as they’ve said it will be built from the ground up on PSP this is already sounding very promising. Also, a few details have been given about Rock Band, they said it will be more like Amplitude (which is an awesome game) so you don’t need to worry about tiny little peripherals which cause carpal tunnel syndrome.
I think it was only last week when we got that little teaser for Dead Rising 2, that proved to be true (well it in fact proved to be viral marketing) I’ve just seen a post on a blog (that of GameSpot UK’s Luke Anderson) which has supposed leaked footage of Star Wars Battlefront 3.
It seems that LucasArts have quickly got YouTube to pull the video, which could possibly mean that somehow it might be legit as I don’t think companies go around pulling fake videos. We all know that Star Wars Battlefront 3 was in development by Free Radical, who recently got bought out by Crytek. So does this mean that it is still in development? Possibly, I think given the sucess of previous battlefront titles and the Star Wars liscence it will come, but when? and from who?
Some news concerning the Nintendo DSi, which was released last year in Japan and has had a TBC date for both the US and Europe for some time now.
Earlier today Nintendo confirmed the DSi will be coming to Europe on April 3 and within the UK it seems that GameStation have begun taking pre-orders for the handheld for the price of £149.99. I’m sure this will be sold out as soon as it gets to this country but if you want a slightly slimmer DS with SD support, bigger screens and two (uterrly pointless) VGA cameras then you might want to get those pre-orders in as soon as possible.
First of all I want to state this is only speculation and rumor.
That out of the way there has been a post on Kotaku showing what appears to be an early teaser for Dead Rising 2, currently there are very few details known about the game just speculation on possible developers. However this current trailer, whilst it has a very shaky cameraman somehow feels more real so either this could be our very first glimse at the elusive Dead Rising 2 or an extremely detailed and convincing hoax.
From what we can see in the video it appears to be set in a Las Vegas style casino complex however there were brief glimses of streets, so here’s hoping that you are not strictly confined to the casino and can actually get out into the surrounding town. Another thing you may have noticed is the human hamster ball, which looks awesome and it fits in with the original games style. I’m really hoping this to be real but seems as all that is really known about this game is that it exists, even a developer has not been officially announced (there are rumors pointing towards Canadian outfit Blue Castle Games) so treat anything about this game with extreme caution and keep in mind even if this is real, the finished product may end up looking wildly different.
